THE STORY:

CITIZEN SCHOOLS INC wrote -

Thanks to the John Hancock Nonprofit Program, Citizen Schools has received 4 bib numbers for the 2013 Boston Marathon to be held on Monday, April 15, 2013!

These numbers will be used to raise much needed funds to help Citizen Schools close the opportunity and achievement gaps for low-income middle schools students in Massachusetts. In Boston, more than 80% of students served by Citizen Schools come from low-income families and identify as racial or ethnic minorities. Most students are struggling in school when they enter our program, and a significant number come from families who have recently immigrated to the United States or speak a language other than English at home. In the communities where we work, academic proficiency and graduation rates are far below state averages and young people need additional support in order to stay on track for success during the challenging middle school years. Over the past several decades, it has become clear that additional resources and standard strategies are not enough to change the course for high-need students. On the 2011 NAEP assessment in reading (aka the Nation’s Report Card), just 34% of 8th grade students earned scores that qualified them as proficient. Results in some urban districts were even poorer, including Boston where just 27% of students achieved proficiency.

An educational challenge of this depth and scale restricts opportunity for individuals and drains resources from society. Students who fail in our schools are far more likely to fail in the job market, and dropouts are more likely to require extensive and expensive social supports without contributing to the workforce or the tax base. One study calculated the social cost of each dropout at $260,000. Citizen Schools believes that all children deserve a high-quality education that prepares them to reach their goals. We strive to provide programming that is relevant and connects students with the resources and experiences they need for success in school, college, and careers.

Those who participate as part of Team Citizen Schools in the 2013 Boston Marathon will play a critical role in raising funds for our important cause! Visit our web site to learn more, or contact us if you have questions!
