EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
I’m a shorty who’s thirty and I’m running 26.2 miles.
My friends and family think I’m crazy and sometimes I question my own sanity, but the fact is, running a marathon is a goal that I’ve had for more years than I can remember and the time is NOW!
But why now and why for Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), you ask?
Let’s break it down:
(1) Keeping it in the family – My cousin, teammate, and captain, Lori Busch, has run two marathons and if I don’t start soon, I’ll never be able to catch up. I’m excited and honored to be running alongside Lori, if I can keep up. And I know this will be an unforgettable experience for two shortys in their 30s to share together.
(2) Defining Life Experiences - I’ve had many and I anticipate training for and running a marathon will make the list. It, therefore, only seems appropriate that I run on behalf of an organization that has provided me with some of my most memorable and life changing experiences.
In the summer of 2012 I had the opportunity to travel to Israel on the CJP sponsored mission with 39 young leaders from the Boston area, including my brother, Adam. Exploring our shared history, climbing Masada at sunrise, floating in the Dead Sea, and celebrating Shabbat in Jerusalem are just a few of the powerful experiences that reinforced my commitment to Israel, Jewish traditions, community, and family.
I am also the proud product of Camp Pembroke, a Jewish girls overnight camp, which CJP supports by providing financial aid to families who couldn’t otherwise afford this experience for their daughters. For those who attended overnight camp, you understand that camp builds confidence, cultivates Jewish identity, and sets the groundwork for future leaders in the Jewish community and beyond.
Money raised for CJP will provide opportunities for teens and young adults to travel to Israel and attend Jewish overnight camp so they too can grow, learn, and develop into proud, inspired adults.
(3) Thirty is the new 26.2 – I’m kicking this next decade off right! And I hope you will join me and my teammates in supporting an organization that does incredible work in Boston and throughout the world. Any donation helps!
Thank you and see you on April 15th!
