BENEFITING: CODMAN ACADEMY FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: CODMAN ACADEMY FOUNDATION
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
After living in Boston for seven years and working at Codman for the past four, I decided it was finally time to run the Boston Marathon for Team Codman. As Codman's Director of Development and track coach extraordinaire, I can attest firsthand to the value of a donation, as I get to see our awesome kids in action on a daily basis. My friends and family have heard Codman stories, seen photos of my track team, and even had the opportunity to meet the students that inspire me daily. Each day, my kids push themselves outside of their comfort zones, whether it be in the classroom or on the athletic field while I cheer them on. On April 15th, the roles will be reversed as I run 26.2 miles from Hopkinton back home to the South End with my Codman family cheering me on.
Last year, Lawrence raised money to buy running shoes for our track team. This year, I am raising money to buy warm up suits, among other things. These small things mean so much to the kids. Thank you for supporting my team!
Team Codman is thrilled to be a part of the John Hancock Boston Marathon Non-Profit Program for the second year. Given Codman Academy's emphasis on health and wellness, this partnership is a natural fit. All funds raised through our marathon team will be applied toward Codman’s Wellness program, which encompasses our physical fitness program as well as our nutrition and health program.
Codman has been recognized as the first and highest scoring school in the state to win the Gold-Level Massachusetts School Wellness Award, given by the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the MA Department of Public Health. We have been able to accomplish this without an on-site gym or athletic fields. In addition to providing sports teams such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, and baseball, Codman also offers activities such as swim lessons, strength and cardio classes in conjunction with the Dorchester YMCA. We provide our entire student body with YMCA memberships so they can continue to exercise outside of school.
Codman also has a student-run Nutrition Action Club, which works to educate the student body on nutrition and health initiatives. We are a 100% junk food free school, which means that no junk food is allowed on campus. We provide healthy lunches and snacks for our students every day.
All donations will go toward the costs of operating our Wellness Program, including facility rental fees, modest coaching stipends, equipment, uniform costs, and healthy snacks. Thank you for supporting this valuable program!
