THE STORY:

In Loving Memory

Although you no longer walk with us in body, you walk with us in spirit.  On November 2nd, 2014 we honor your memory by running 26.2 miles through the five burroughs of New York City.  Your life’s impression continues to inspire and motivate.

For anyone that knew John, you are reminded of an incredible person.  For those that didn’t know him, he never left you without a smile.  His laughter was contagious.  He was a striking man of convictions composed of static moral fiber, an empathetic heart, a gentle soul, and a comforting presence.  The manner in which he lived his life was inspiring. He was humble and selfless, constantly thinking of others and their needs.  John was funny as hell!  His sense of humor could not be duplicated; original and often inappropriate; he could always break the ice.

This run is for you, John. Love you, brother.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 11th 2009, Dr. John Moreno laced up his shoes and entered the cool Chicago morning. Michael, Nicholas, and friends stood along Michigan Ave near the 25th mile marker hours later.  Nestled in a crowd of spectators they waited, eager and curious to witness John’s race and cheer him on.  It was evident he was exhausted, yet he still managed to construct an enthusiastic grin.  Passing high-fives down the line of onlookers he sustained toward Grant Park and the finish line. The moment would resound.  He had completed his first marathon.

One year later, on October 10th, John returned to the starting line of the Chicago Marathon, now standing alongside Michael, and his first marathon.  It was something Michael had never thought possible before John’s performance the previous year.  They both completed the race, running the first several miles together, side by side. Following suit, Nicholas has now registered with his brother Michael to take his first stab at a 26.2 mile run. With the Good Lord willing, they will complete the NYC course this November in dedication to an unforgettable friend and brother, who reminds us:

“The battle of life is, in most cases, fought uphill; and to win it without a struggle were perhaps to win it without honor. If there were no difficulties there would be no success; if there were nothing to struggle for, there would be nothing to be achieved.”

-Samuel Smiles

John lived his own life in the same fashion and routine.  As a doctor and medical journeyman, his obstacles were grand, challenges numerous, and at a steep incline.  He constantly defied the impossible and persevered.  He possessed such strong qualities of dedication and resilience; you couldn’t help but feel inspired. John had no idea he was leaving behind such a lasting impression on those who walked with him. Though departed, John conquered his disease by the manner in which he lived.  He found his way on the road less traveled and did so with love in his heart.

MORE ABOUT OUR CHARITY....

The Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation has been working in New York City since 2003, raising awareness of colorectal cancer, funding screening programs for the uninsured, and providing much needed funds to young investigators who are committed to finding a cure for colorectal cancer.

More than an estimated 51,000 Americans died from colon cancer this past year.  When you joinTeam Colon Cancer Challenge you join the fight against colorectal cancer and help us spread the word that colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable with early screening.

Each member of Team Colon Cancer Challenge has pledged to Make Their Miles Count by raising funds to support the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation’s mission of a World Without Colorectal Cancer.

The Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation launched Team Colon Cancer Challenge in 2010 to:

  • Encourage colorectal cancer survivors to incorporate exercise into their everyday lives as a way to significantly reduce the rate of recurrence,
  • Provide a grassroots opportunity for colorectal cancer survivors and their family members to raise awareness and funds for colorectal cancer in their community,
  • Offer those who have lost a loved one to colorectal cancer a positive and effective channel for their rallying cry against colorectal cancer.

Team Colon Cancer Challenge has raised more than $350,000 in support of efforts to raise awareness of colorectal cancer and the importance of early screening, prevention, and research.
