BENEFITING: COLON CANCER CHALLENGE FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: COLON CANCER CHALLENGE FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014
Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
I appreciate your donations in support of my personal challenge of running the 2014 New York City Marathon, benefiting the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation. But, what's even more important to me is your clean bill of health.
Colorectal cancer is third most common cancer in the world, with nearly 1.4 million new cases diagnosed in 2012. Half a million friends, family members and neighbors will lose their battle with colorectal cancer this year.
Colorectal cancer is often referred to as the "silent killer". You can have colorectal cancer in its late stages and be completely unaware that you have it. Understanding the signs and symptoms and getting screened for colorectal cancer early increases the chances of overcoming the disease and victory. Surgery can cure about 90% of colorectal cancers when they are found early. Not getting screened is dangerous and stupid considering there are multiple screening options available.
So, if you're 40 years or older, have a family history of colorectal cancer or certain risk factors talk to your doctor about getting screened. Get screened between now and the New York City Marathon on November 2, 2014, make a small donation, and Fiona and I will match your donation with a $50 matching gift. If you've been checked out in the last year great! Let me know and I'll recognize your donation and clean bill of health with a $50 matching gift. If you're wondering when you should get re checked visit the American Cancer Society site for the latest screening guidelines. http://www.cancer.org/cancer/colonandrectumcancer/moreinformation/colonandrectumcancerearlydetection/colorectal-cancer-early-detection-acs-recommendations
Now, book that appointment with your doctor, get screened and let me know your results.
I love a challenge! 26.2 miles sounds like a pretty worthwhile challenge to me and at the same time help raise awareness of Colorectal Cancer and the work the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation does.
This year I will be running with two of my closest mates. Fortunately we have not had to confront colon cancer ourselves, but our lives have been touched by those that have. I am running in support of them and their families.
The Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation has been working in New York City since 2003, raising awareness of colorectal cancer, funding screening programs for the uninsured, and providing much needed funds to young investigators who are committed to finding a cure for colorectal cancer.
More than an estimated 51,000 Americans died from colon cancer this past year. When you joinTeam Colon Cancer Challenge you join the fight against colorectal cancer and help us spread the word that colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable with early screening.
Each member of Team Colon Cancer Challenge has pledged to Make Their Miles Count by raising funds to support the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation’s mission of a World Without Colorectal Cancer.
The Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation launched Team Colon Cancer Challenge in 2010 to:
- Encourage colorectal cancer survivors to incorporate exercise into their everyday lives as a way to significantly reduce the rate of recurrence,
- Provide a grassroots opportunity for colorectal cancer survivors and their family members to raise awareness and funds for colorectal cancer in their community,
- Offer those who have lost a loved one to colorectal cancer a positive and effective channel for their rallying cry against colorectal cancer.
Team Colon Cancer Challenge has raised more than $350,000 in support of efforts to raise awareness of colorectal cancer and the importance of early screening, prevention, and research.
