According to the Colon Cancer Alliance, the lifetime risk of developing Colon Cancer is about 1 in 20 (5%). Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women combined in the United States.
In March 2014 my sister-in-law, Stephanine "Lovey" Uftring was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. Stephanie had prior knowledge of family history and proactively pursued a screening but was denied by her insurance as she was under the age of 50 and without symptoms. Unfortunately, it wasn't until she began suffering from indicators that medical intervention was permitted.
After a series of tests and scans, Stephanie was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, underwent major surgery and endured doses of chemotherapy that caused uncomfortable side effects. Needless to say, it has been agonizing for her family and friends to watch her go through this.
Never one to back down from a challenge, Stephanie has fought incredibly hard since learning of her diagnosis to maintain her health and help raise awareness around colon cancer and the importance of early detection, all the while, bravely displaying her infectious smile and sustaining the sense of humor that has earned her the Love of so many of her family and friends.
Stephanie's experience and effort to educate those around her has taught me that screenings save lives and that colon cancer is 90 percent treatable when caught early. I am running The 2014 NYC Marathon in Stephanie's honor, please join me in Stephanie's mission to reduce colon cancer by raising money for this important cause.
