EVENT DATE: Mar 17, 2013
Dear family, friends, colleagues, and supporters
I (we) did it! Proud to say I finished my first ½ marathon on Mar 17! My son and I did the charity marathon relay; he ran the first leg, and I the 2nd. Considering where I am at 59, we did fairly well, thanks to my son’s running time (13.1 miles in about 1:18 for a pace of just under 6mn/mile-he’s a gazelle compared to his tortoise dad) which boosted our relay up to the 6th ranking in a field of almost 300 overall relay, or 4th among 90 teams of males , or 2nd of 6 in my age group (yeah, it helps to run with your kids as team members!). my personal time was more like 2:12 (pace 9:32/mile), for a combined time of 3:30 for the Doan team. I think there were over 23,000 runners that day!!
I was simply glad to finish because almost half way through my race my left calf cramped up into an excruciatingly painful muscle stick (inexperience showed!). I hobbled for a while, losing time, but managed to mentally and physically “teach” the leg to relax enough to complete the remaining 7miles, struggling against my brain playing tricks on me as to quit or not to quit… but with each step closer to the finish line, the thought of giving up slowly faded behind me…
A huge part of the encouragement was due to your support… I felt like I ran for each of you too. I couldn’t let anyone down. I’m just glad to play however small a role in contributing to social equity to any minority group, and your support has been of great help! (Note: a great samaritan donated $500 separately by mail, which doesn't show up here, so we are short only by about $80!!!)
Where I still am running a bit behind, is in reaching my fund raising goal, but I’m pretty close!! The site is still open and accepts donations, so if you know of others who might be able to assist, please let them know! it is very appreciated! (note: the site won’t show donations made directly by mail to the org) I’ve learned more about the Courage team too, a very dedicated group of people from across the country advocating for many progressive causes, not just one.
thank you, thank you a whole bunch!
