EVENT DATE: Mar 17, 2013
I am not running the race this year, but I am hoping to raise some money for the team. Some of you may know that I was registered to run last year and for some reason during the year just could not run very far and my training lagged so much that I decided not to try it at all. It was funny, I could hardly run a mile or two after having run a dozen marathons in the past. So, I organized the team, shuttled folks to the start and home from the finish, and celebrated everyone's medal and mettle. What a great team. They raised almost $45,000.
A week after the marathon last year, I found out that I had colon cancer. Ah! That explains why I could not run very far. I had some large tumors that had been growing for a year or two. Anyway, I had them removed and received six months of chemo, and now I am back in action. Not enough action, though, to run a marathon yet this year. I am good for about a half mile right now. But by next year, I'm confident I can run this race.
Anyway, I posted a picture of my daughters Geneva and Florence here because they give me reason and strength to get through chemo and all that, and to live for a good long time. But they also give me reason to hope and work for a more fair and just society, one in which all people have access to equal protection under the law and enjoy equal civil and human rights. So, while I cannot run this year, I still want to fight for justice now, and I will try to run next year.
So, if you have a few bucks to kick in to support this team, I will be grateful. And although I hope that when Florence and Geneva grow up they will have to stretch their imaginations to envision a world where equality was not the norm, I know that when they understand, they will thank you too.
