THE STORY:

Crittenton Women's Union Inc wrote -

Crittenton Women's Union (CWU) is proud to field a team for the 117th running of the Boston Marathon in 2013, with the partnership and support of John Hancock Non-Profit Marathon Program.

With a fund-raising goal of $25,000 and a commitment to raising awareness, Team CWU will powerfully further CWU’s mission to help low-income women and their families build better futures for themselves and their families. In 2012, CWU programs served 1,400 people through our housing, alternative education, career development, and family support programs.

Poverty: The issue

  • 91% of the 1,400 people CWU served had incomes below the Federal Poverty Line or $19,090/yr. for a family of three.
  • To be economically self-sufficient in Massachusetts—meaning the ability to cover basic living expenses without financial assistance—a family of three needs an income of 3.2 times Federal Poverty Line, or $61,618.
  • Most jobs that pay enough to support a family require an AA or advanced training. Only 9% of CWU clients earned an AA or higher. CWU clients need tremendous assistance and support to pursue GED’s, AA and BA degrees, and job training.

CWU: The Solution

CWU takes a groundbreaking approach to its important social mission, working with each participant long-term as she acquires the skills necessary to create an economically secure and independent life. CWU’s original research advances continuous program improvements and innovation that helps participants succeed. In 2012…

  • CWU’s GED program graduated more students than all but one of the other programs in the city of Boston.
  • In Career Family Opportunity—CWU’s pioneering, five-year, economic self-sufficiency program—93% of program participants were either employed and/or were enrolled in an education/ training program.
  • Employed CFO participants averaged an hourly wage of $19.72—146% higher than the Massachusetts minimum wage. By the end of FY12, all CFO participants had saved a combined total of $47,115.
