BENEFITING: AINSLEYSANGELS OF AMERICA
Get out of the way! We have a runner on our hands and as we have told our son Davis since he was born, the sky is the limit! With your help, we are raising funds to support Ainsley's Angels and to purchase for Davis a Hoyt Blade 2, his own custom race chair. Thank you for helping Davis's journey to keep flying! Here is his story...
In 2001, when Kate was 16 weeks pregnant, we were told that our son was special. We both replied, "Yes we know he is special, since having had five miscarriages, we finally made it to the second trimester!" What we were about to learn, though, was that by "special", the doctor meant that our baby would be entering the world with many more challenges that the typical child has. The next few moments, hours, days, weeks, months and years have been filled not only with an enormous amount of challenges, but also with a support system of family, friends, teachers, therapists, and medical professionals ready to tackle whatever has headed Davis's way. From day one, he has been surrounded by love, compassion, patience, wisdom, and peace. But none of this has matched Davis's love for life! It is unlike anything we have ever seen or experienced! He lives with multiple congenital conditions: arthrogryposis, polymicrogyria, Dandy Walker syndrome, a seizure disorder, and feeding challenges which require the use of a feeding tube. These conditions encompass a myriad of limitations, both physically and mentally, which challenge him in a daily basis. He has approached all 36 surgeries with a smile on his face, knowing that each one was necessary to help his body! If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Davis in person, we can tell you that he lights up the room and touches everyone with his love for life! In late March we were introduced to an amazing individual, Mark Campbell, and the Holly Springs Run Club as well as Ainsley's Angels. They took Davis for his first run and he squealed with joy the entire time! The next week people were "fighting" to push Davis in the loaner race chair from Anisley's Angels! Sunday, April 10th was a life changing moment for Davis where he learned to FLY in the Raleigh Rock and Roll 1/2 Marathon where a "runner" was born! Mark took Davis for the ride of his life that day, and he learned what it felt like to FLY! (By the way, Mark had a PR pushing that morning!) His next race was a 5k where Aaron Wenzel, and the HSRC pushed him through some bumpy terrain towards the end, and he flew again. On April 30, Davis completed his second 1/2 marathon, pushed by three amazing women, Kim, Amie and Heather in what we have come to call #teamdavis #teampush with the HSRC. For a child who can only walk with assistance, flying in a running chair has changed his life! That day, in team push, they helped Davis walk across the finish line and there was not a dry eye there! Davis will be fourteen on May 3, and we have found a sport where he can be free to fly as fast as he can! His race shirts say, "Watch me FLY!" Yes indeed. Watch him!
