BENEFITING: THE JOHN WAYNE CANCER FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: THE JOHN WAYNE CANCER FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: May 06, 2012
I've always been thankful to God that I have not personally experienced the loss of a close family member from cancer. I hear the stories and I've cried with my friends who have experienced the loss of a loved one. And in the back of my mind, I know that there is a very real possibility that one day my luck may change...
I am a novice runner, only having taken up the sport last April. I ran my first half marathon last October, and just a week before my race, my good friend Elias lost his father Fidel to cancer. I dedicated my half marathon in loving memory of Fidel Arreloa.
This last week, I ran my first marathon-the LA Marathon. The day before the race, Ric Hammond lost his ten year battle with cancer. My friend Michelle lost her husband and loving life companion and I dedicated my first marathon in celebration of Ric's life.
On May 6th, I will run the OC half marathon. When I saw that the John Wayne Cancer Foundation is one of the OC half marathon's official charities, I felt compelled to run and raise money for this foundation in honor of Fidel and Ric and all those fathers, brothers, uncles and sons who are battling or have lost their fight with cancer.
Thanks for listening.
