THE STORY:

  • I am running this marathon for many reasons.
  • Reason 1 - Training and completing the marathon will be a physical challenge for me.
  • Reason 2 - I feel compelled to raise awareness about domestic violence, especially in the hispanic community.
  • Reason 3 - I have 3 children ( 2 boys and 1 daughter (who by the way will also be running this marathon and raising funds for DVC).
  • Some facts: 18-24 year-olds comprised only 11.7% of the population in 1998 and 2002, but were the majority of victims of violence committed by a boyfriend or girlfriend (42%).
  • Approximately one in five female high school students reports being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner.
  • In a study of eighth and ninth graders, 25 percent indicated that they had been victims of dating violence, including eight percent who disclosed being sexually abused.
  • In a survey of 232 high school girls, 17.8% of the participants indicated that they had been forced to engage in sexual activity against their will by a dating partner.
  • Among female students between the ages of 15-20 who reported at least one violent act during a dating relationship, 24% reported experiencing extremely violent incidents such as rape or the use of weapons against them.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CENTER OF SANTA wrote -

According to statistics published by the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) in 2010 on September 15th, 5,261 victims were provided with services from domestic violence agencies throughout California. 1 out of 4 women experience abuse by their boyfriend or spouse and only ¼ of women report the abuse. Tragically,  3 women a day are killed by their abusers.

Domestic violence is no longer a family matter. It affects individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. It is a growing problem in the country creating a long lasting impact on victims and family.

DVC of the SCV provides free services to survivors of domestic violence. Services include 24 hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, counseling services, court advocacy, legal referrals and community outreach.
