Team Earthquake Organizing California for Resilience
Organized by: Christina Hawes
We have a big problem. There's an major earthquake coming and still most people don't know where they will go to find help. Hospitals are too few and far, and communities have no preplanned meeting place for those who need help or those that can help.
Unsafe Schools. Many school districts given the job of protecting our children are not retrofitting old buildings and walls that are seismically unsafe (AB300 study of California K-12 schools). School Boards are defensive and brush the problems under the rug with a "We've got it covered" attitude. But the truth is clear ; major earthquake disasters will need helping hands, skills , and rescue efforts from the whole community. Unfortunately , teachers and staff are sadly not trained in earthquake injuries or basic search and rescue. Fearing liability, school districts have decided in bad judgement that all parents even skilled and qualified parents will be locked outside the gates of the school after the disaster strikes even if the building has collapsed or is on fire.
No First Responders. Fire fighters will be dealing with the many fires around the city. Law enforcement, will be protecting the law. Relief workers will need days to reach us if they decide to come to our area. All communication will be down. Who will help? Who will be there for our children?
The Solution, Together is Better . Team earthquake is the Big Push for disaster preparedness in schools and in communities firstly among established organizations. We will make it our job to pull everyone together , to plan together, to work together. It's our only hope.
It's COMMUNITY RESILIENCE.
Our Strategy. This campaign aims to bring action by focusing on volunteer groups that already have the experience of working together such as schools PTA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, AYSO, Little League any other organization with community/parent volunteers. We will work to coordinate, togetherness now , a melting pot of thousands of parent volunteers from several organizations for the common cause of community disaster first response and relief. We will promote CERT training (FEMA's Community Emergency Response Teams) and medical first aid for all ages.
We will promote the effectiveness of a Neighborhood Response Station in front of every public school. Team Earthquake will bring everyone including disaster managers, fire fighters, law enforcement, teachers, parent volunteers, CERT Teams to all the public schools to communicate before and after the earthquake and move toward a better, together preparedness and first response. We will establish an easily understood community resource ,a meeting place in front of every public school with a tree of trained community first responders , skilled residents, ready to be there, for our children and for us .
Ready or Not.The moment will come without warning and the force of the powerful San Andreas will pound away at our doors and rattle our homes. Will we be ready? Please help now. It will make all the difference in saving lives.
