Saved from euthanasia at a high kill shelter in SC, Ellie's story is a bit of a mystery. Dumped as a "stray", she had a crushed skull and eye socket along with a soft tissue injury to her back leg such that she could not use it. After consulting with a surgeon it was determined that her leg would heal on its own and with rest and pain meds, her head injuries would resolve themselves as well. She does suffer from diminished vision in her eye but after having it looked at by a specialist, it was found that there is nothing they can do other than to apply occassional drops to help keep it lubricated.
Underneath the surface injuries however was a far more deadly problem. Ellie was found to be Heartworm Positive - a disease easy to prevent but difficult and costly to cure. Eventually, most dogs will die if the worms are not treated and in the process, their suffering can be great. Of course this is not an option for us so Ellie will be getting the care she needs.
Ellie has already received extensive pre-treatment workup, including X-rays, blood work, and all the tests needed to establish how serious the infection is. She requires two or three injections of medicine that will kill the adult heartworms in her blood vessels of the heart. From there, she will require a lot of bed rest and limited exercise as the worms die and are eliminated from her body. Thankfully she has a wonderful foster mom willing to provide her the quite home she needs to get well. We are looking to raise approximately $2,000 to go toward her previous bills and ongoing care.
Ellie needs you in her fight to live. Your help in getting her well would be greatly appreciated.
Go Team Ellie!!!
