THE STORY:

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AS A PATIENT: In March 2010, I was diagnosed with a vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) brain tumor.  Its size left surgical removal as the only treatment option.  The surgery is extremely delicate and requires a highly skilled and experienced surgeon to prevent facial paralysis and the many complications associated with this procedure.  The Internet is full of stories of individuals who have experienced less-than-positive surgical results. Our neighbor, who had been successfully treated for cancer by Dr. Daniel Deschler, highly recommended MEEI.  Our research found MEEI to be a top rated, cutting-edge, research and treatment facility and Harvard Medical School teaching hospital with patients from around the world benefiting from their medical expertise.  After careful consideration, I chose Dr. Michael McKenna from MEEI and his team to perform my operation.  On May 28, 2010, Dr. McKenna successfully removed my tumor during a 12 hour surgery.  My wife, Terry, and I credit him with the postive outcome.  MEEI has our eternal gratitude!

WHY TERRY AND I PARTICIPATE: Our personal experiences with MEEI have made Terry and I passionate about giving back so that future patients will have access to the same exemplary medical treatment and the best possible surgical result that I did.  Terry ran for Team Eye and Ear in 2011 raising funds for the Neurotology Fellowship, which provides the specialized training necessary to ensure that a new generation of highly qualified physicians will be there to replace those working today.  The Fellowship Program is two years in duration, and the annual cost is $80,000.  In a conversation with Dr. McKenna, he explained to us, "There is no greater mission than the support and development of the next generation of specialists and caregivers."  We wholeheartedly agree.  Terry and I are very excited to be able to participate together on this year's team, and we will be designating our contributions to the same, valuable program.

WHY GIVE TO MEEI? We realize there are literally hundreds of organizations out there competing for your charitable donations.  This world certainly has an incredible amount of suffering and need.  If you're like us, you want to make sure your hard-earned dollars are going to be put to good use.  MEEI is a worthy organization and a good steward of your charitable contribution.  I'm just one example of the literally hundreds of patients from around the world that receive hope and the benefit of the latest treatments at MEEI every year.  Terry and I highly encourage you to consider sharing in our passion by making a donation today so that others may experience the hope and reality, like I did, of a healthier tomorrow.  Thank you for your generosity!

At Mass. Eye and Ear, our focus is your quality of life.  We treat everything that has to do with the eyes, ears, nose, throat, head and neck - so that you and those you care about can get more out of the world around us.

Our physicians are more than just specialists; each is also a researcher and a teacher.  These doctors don't just apply the latest advances in medicine; they invent them.  Together with Mass. Eye and Ear scientists, they work tirelessly to understand the root causes of diseases that both take people's lives and rob too many others of their quality of life.

Every dollar raised makes it possible for Mass. Eye and Ear to excel in clinical care, research and medical education.  That, in turn, allows us to provide the finest specialty care to every person who comes through our door and to share our knowledge in order to help patients around the world.

Thank you for your support.
