BENEFITING: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
ORGANIZER: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
EVENT: 2012 Boston Marathon
Both of my kids (Matthew, 24, and Rachel, 16) have Retinitis Pigmentosa, a potentially debilitating disease of the retina, which causes a constricted field of vision, light sensitivity, and night blindness. Thanks to the Mass Eye & Ear Infirmary, the prognosis for both kids has improved since they were diagnosed over ten years ago, but much needs to be done in order to retain the vision that they have and for them to be fully independent throughout their adult years.
I'm running Boston this year to raise money for MEEI, but also to set the expectation for my kids that a disability doesn't have to hamper their success, which I do by running with a below-knee prosthesis. A birth defect left my right leg shortened and missing a true weight-bearing foot, but thanks to modern prosthetic technology (and my prosthetist - Joel Dwyer of West Barnstable, MA) I'm able to run distances that I never dreamed of covering when I was young.
All three of us are working to defy the odds. Matthew is a graduate of the Mass College of Art & Design and on his own in Boston. Rachel is an honor roll student at her high school and participates in a number of extracurricular activities. Anything that I can do to support their ongoing success is my ultimate goal.
Please help me to reach my fundraising goal for the Mass Eye & Ear Infirmary, which I've set at $6000.
At Mass. Eye and Ear, our focus is your quality of life. We treat everything that has to do with the eyes, ears, nose, throat, head and neck - so that you and those you care about can get more out of the world around us.
Our physicians are more than just specialists; each is also a researcher and a teacher. These doctors don't just apply the latest advances in medicine; they invent them. Together with Mass. Eye and Ear scientists, they work tirelessly to understand the root causes of diseases that both take people's lives and rob too many others of their quality of life.
Every dollar raised makes it possible for Mass. Eye and Ear to excel in clinical care, research and medical education. That, in turn, allows us to provide the finest specialty care to every person who comes through our door and to share our knowledge in order to help patients around the world.
Thank you for your support.
