BENEFITING: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
ORGANIZER: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
EVENT: 2012 Boston Marathon
I am running the 2012 Boston Marathon this April to support the work we started last year to develop the pediatric laryngology lab and to translate basic science research into practical ways of helping children who cannot speak to finally speak and children who cannot breathe (without a tracheotomy) to finally breathe.
I am also running this year’s marathon in support of our combined Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary / Massachusetts General Hospital for Children Pediatric Airway Surgery Mission to Ecuador. This mission is called Operation Airway. It is a first of its kind in the world where we bring a combined team of pediatric otolaryngologists, pediatric anesthesiologists, pediatric intensivists, and pediatric nurses all down to Ecuador to perform airway reconstructive surgeries on children and to have their tracheotomies safely removed and to allow them to breathe by themselves for the very first time. The goal of these missions is to help the children one at a time, but then, also, to teach the local health care doctors and nurses the skills and team training required so that we hope that, in several years, we will no longer be needed there and can move elsewhere to help children in other areas who need it!

At Mass. Eye and Ear, our focus is your quality of life. We treat everything that has to do with the eyes, ears, nose, throat, head and neck - so that you and those you care about can get more out of the world around us.
Our physicians are more than just specialists; each is also a researcher and a teacher. These doctors don't just apply the latest advances in medicine; they invent them. Together with Mass. Eye and Ear scientists, they work tirelessly to understand the root causes of diseases that both take people's lives and rob too many others of their quality of life.
Every dollar raised makes it possible for Mass. Eye and Ear to excel in clinical care, research and medical education. That, in turn, allows us to provide the finest specialty care to every person who comes through our door and to share our knowledge in order to help patients around the world.
Thank you for your support.
