"You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give."
Some of you may or may not know that I am running this marathon in honor of my nephew, Alex. Its always easier to get your butt off the couch when you are training for a cause that's important to you ;)
Alex was born with a rare condition called Sturge Webers Syndrome, which is a disease that can effect both the eyes and the brain. One of the major symptoms of this disease is Glaucoma and fluid build up in the eye, and unfortunately Glaucoma is something that Alex suffers with and will continue to have to deal with rest of his life.
Last April, Dr. Douglas Rhee of Mass Eye and Ear performed an invasive surgery on Alex, which involved inserting a shunt to alleviate the fluid build up and pressure in Alex's eye. The surgery was a success and for now, the pressure in Alex's eye is stable.
Alex will continue to need these surgeries, and will continue to need the medical expertise of Dr. Rhee and the other amazing Dr.'s at Mass Eye and Ear. Which is why I chose to run the Boston Marathon for Mass Eye and Ear.
Dr. Rhee does not just treat children, but adults as well and every penny you donate will be go directly to Dr. Rhee and his research efforts to find less invasive surgical techniques that will be used for surgeries such as the one Alex went through.
Sturge Webers Syndrome is not a well known disease. There aren't any well known or well funded organizations to support the kind of research and attention that this disease demands - which is why our family is so appreciative of your donation
See you at the finish line! <3
