BENEFITING: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
ORGANIZER: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
EVENT: 2016 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 18, 2016
In 2015, I ran the Boston Marathon, my first race ever, to support a local non-profit. This year, I am running the Boston Marathon for Mass Eye and Ear to raise awareness of Dr. Chris Hartnick’s important, life-saving pediatric work. Together with his very dedicated and talented team, Dr. Hartnick has helped countless children with severe airway problems by performing tracheostomies.
One of those lives saved is Lucas--an active, loving five-year old boy with all the energy in the world! Born with Down syndrome, he has been through many medical procedures in his short life including heart surgery, a tonsillectomy, laryngeal cleft repair, four sets of ear tubes, two separate feeding tubes, and most recently reconstructive surgery on his airway and a tracheotomy.
His favorite things are airplanes, motorcycles, and playing ball! He talks using word approximations and making up his own sign language that he expects you to understand. He knows how to spell his name, count to 10, and all his shapes and colors. Lucas lights up any room just by being in it. He often forgets that the whole world doesn't revolve around him, (but secretly it does!) Despite all of the traumatic events that Lucas has been through he still has so much love for life. He is one of the most resilient people I have ever met, and he has a smile that is so very contagious.
Dr. Hartnick and the Mass Eye and Ear have provided many an opportunity once unimaginable. The team is largely responsible for where Lucas is today. I hope you'll help join me in raising funds to help those like Lucas and their loving families.
