EVENT: 2016 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 18, 2016
For the last two years my wife has been involved with the Mass Eye and Ear Patient Family Advisory Counsel and all that time I was wondering how I could contribute. Well, here is my chance! Below is our motivation.
In 2010 my wife gave birth to twin boys born three months premature. Each weighed 2 ½ pounds at birth. One son spent three months in a neonatal intensive care unit. After an additional two months, our second son was released from the nicu and we finally became a complete family at home.
For one of the twins, thus began a relatively normal life. For the other twin, though, there were more hurdles ahead. He was diagnosed with tracheobronchomalacia, basically a floppy/collapsing airway. When we finally could bring him home from the NICU he came home with a tracheotomy tube in his neck. The “trach tube” complicated everything he did and required around the clock attention. We thank God for the small plastic tube that saved our son’s life yet consumed our family’s life for the better.
Over the past six years we have come to know The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary doctors and nurses personally and see first-hand that their compassion and sense of devotion are just as wonderful as their skills and techniques. If you met our son today and did not know his history you would never guess what he has been through, check out the pictures.
Our goal is to help ease the struggles for the next family that might be in need of a “trach tube” for their child. We hope to achieve this goal by raising money essential to expand Mass Eye and Ear Pediatric ENT Deparment’s fantastic clinical care and life-changing research. In addition, MEEI will provide humanitarian education here and abroad to train families and health care workers to better care for children with “trach tubes.”
Many children do not have the same storybook ending as our son. Thank you very much for helping us give back!
