Dad's Cancer Update
March 13, 2016
BENEFITING: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
ORGANIZER: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
EVENT: 2016 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 18, 2016
In 2015, I supported Team Eye and Ear and ran my first Boston Marathon. At the time, I was new to running and had the opportunity to accomplish my life-long goal of running in the Boston Marathon. It was an incredible experience to run the greatest marathon in the world, and it was tremendously rewarding to support the research and treatments at Mass Eye and Ear.
This year, I am back with Team Eye and Eye, but for very different reasons. Recently, my dad—a long-time supporter of MEEI—was diagnosed with throat cancer at MEEI. His surgeon, Dr. Song, removed a benign polyp in his throat; however, there were cancerous cells lurking nearby. After undergoing 6 weeks of almost daily radiation treatments, we are crossing our fingers waiting for the prognosis in March. The doctors have been optimistic that they caught this relatively early, and that the treatment is usually effective. However, Dr. Song is working on some research that could lead much earlier detection of these type of cancers. And for that reason, I am running the 2016 Boston Marathon to support Dr. Song’s research in honor of my father John C. Cannistraro, Sr. Please join me in supporting this research.
Thank you all for your support and encouragement. I will provide updates of my dad’s condition as we get more information.
