Over the past 7 years, I have made multiple medical mission trips to Honduras. Two years ago, a mom brought her young daughter, Lizette, into the clinic. Although we were there to treat venous insufficiency, she was hoping we could look at her daughter's eye which was enlarged, protruding, without sight, and painful. After extensive testing, she was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma. We made a promise to her that we would figure out how to get the surgery that she needed. Through friends of patients and many hours of communication with people in Honduras, along with the generosity of the doctor I work with, I am proud to say a year later Lizette was able to successfully have her eye surgically removed and a prosthesis put in its place.
I am thrilled to be combining my love of running with my love of mission work by joining Mass Eye and Ear's 2016 Boston Marathon team, Team Eye and Ear. The money I am raising will go to their office of global surgery and health to help people like Lizette in underprivileged countries!
