Introducing Sally, Heather, and Julia...
The three of us are thrilled to be running the 2016 Boston Marathon and proud to be supporting Mass Eye and Ear. This institution is near and dear to our family, with the relationship dating back to the 1960's when our Ankeny great-grandparents (Sally's grandparents) first came to Boston for sight-saving retina surgeries by an innovative young surgeon named Dr. Charles Schepens. The fondness for and gratitude to Dr. Schepens led to many years of service and support for Schepens Eye Research Institute, and now Mass Eye and Ear. Our grandfather (Sally's father) also had surgery by Dr. Schepens to repair retinal detachments, and we are pleased to say that he is still active on the Board at MEEI.
This is an exciting time right now at Mass Eye and Ear, as the new Bold Science. Life Changing Cures Campaign moves forward. For the first time, they can promise that every child will see and hear throughout her lifetime. We are proud to run to make the research for these life-changing cures possible, but we need your help in reaching our ambitious fund-raising goal of $26,200.
Sally: 2016 marks my third straight year running Boston with Team Eye and Ear. It has been an amazing and very rewarding experience! (Well, we can discount last year's weather...) I am honored to serve as a trustee at Mass Eye and Ear, and the more I learn about the cutting edge research and the miraculous clinical care going on here, the more I want to help these doctors and scientists achieve their goals. I am very proud of the fact that with the very generous support of so many of you, I have managed to raise over $55,000 for eye research at Mass Eye and Ear the past two years. Thank you, philanthropy is necessary to this mission! And this year will be extra special, because I am lucky to have two daughters running with me.
Heather: I was inspired by my mom’s marathon achievements in 2014 and 2015, and decided I too wanted to run Boston one day. Age 26 seems as good a year as any to run 26 miles, and I couldn’t be more honored to be joining the team to run on behalf of Mass Eye and Ear. As a medical student myself, I have learned the importance of compassionate care and the importance of research, and am confident our fundraising will directly benefit future patients. I am excited to be running alongside my sister and hopefully not more than a hour or two behind my mother!
Julia: I am really psyched to be joining Team Eye and Ear this year with my mom and sister. Mass Eye and Ear means a lot to our own family, and to so many other families because of the amazing and inspirational work they do there that can change people's lives for the better. Running a marathon has always been a goal of mine, and watching our mom the past two years has been such an inspiration. Heather and I can't wait to chase her to the finish line in April!
PLEASE JOIN US IN SUPPORTING THE WORK AT MASS EYE AND EAR BY DONATING TODAY. Thank you, and we will see you at the FINISH LINE!!
