BENEFITING: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
ORGANIZER: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
EVENT: 2016 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 18, 2016
I'll be running my first marathon and no better reason to do it than for an amazing institution!!
If you look in my pictures, you will see a little boy. His name is Bennett. He is currently on his way to making his second birthday. However, if it wasn't for Mass Eye and Ear, he probably wouldn't be with us today. Here is his story...
Bennett was born a few weeks premature. He was sent home from the hospital, as every "normal" baby is after being checked out by doctors. However, the family knew something was not right. Bennett was having trouble eating and he was sleeping 23 out of 24 hours a day. Something was clearly not right. So, Bennett and his parents visited 5 doctors and specialists for an answer, but no one could give them one. Until, Dr Hartnik was found at Mass Eye and Ear. He listened to all of their concerns and agreed that something was out of place. He decided to scope Bennett's airway and low and behold, he found the issue. Bennett had a condition called long segment laryngotracheal malasia. Also known as a floppy airway which required a tracheostomy in order to keep Bennett's airway open so he could breathe. After many long days and night spent in the intensive care unit, Bennett was able to go home and grow and develop like any other infant.
I am lucky enough to be one of Bennett's homecare nurses. I have seen the amazing work that Dr Hartnik, his team and all employees of Mass Eye and Ear have put in to allowing Bennett to have a "normal" life. I am blessed to have the opportunity to help contribute to this amazing cause and to work hand in hand with Mass Eye and Ear while watching Bennett grow and develop into a very smart and funny little toddler. If Bennett can survive through the struggle he has, then I can make it through 26.2 miles, no problem. Giving to this amazing cause allows any and all children to have a fighting chance. Wouldn't you want that if you had a child who couldn't breathe? Please consider making a donation to this amazing cause!!
Thank you all so very much! xoxo
