On October 20th 2016, I got an email from Mass Eye and Ear Hospital asking if I wanted to be part of something big and of course when you read my family’s story you will understand why the answer was yes!
On February 10th 1999 my husband and I were granted the gift of having triplet girls weighing from 2-3 pounds, frighteningly small, but amazingly perfect.
However, in less than 24 hours the team at Massachusetts General Hospital told us that we would have a long road to go; one of the girls was born with severe esophageal birth defects. She could not eat; she had no inlet to her stomach, and had a type c fistula to her lungs. Through hand holding with talented surgeons and nurses her birth defects were repaired, or so we hoped.
The next year the girls grew and flourished but one always remained fragile, a realization that became real when one night we woke to her struggling to breathe. After a fearful 911 ride and a meeting with the otology pediatric surgical team at Mass Eye and Ear we learned her esophagus was not growing and it was consistent with a child that should weigh two pounds. Mass Eye and Ear conducted a complicated surgery to re-construct a trachea and esophagus for our daughter from her ribs. Two months later we brought her home. Surely we would now be okay and enjoy the craziness of raising three beautiful girls.
Another year of illness passed and we were at Mass Eye and Ear again seeking help. Our daughter was in a constant state of pneumonia. Several days later we met a new surgeon at Mass Eye and Ear who said, I will take care of her. She had another birth defect, a hole in her larynx. She was aspirating slowly and consistently into her lungs. Once again with the extremely talented and caring team at Mass Eye and Ear surgically her birth defect was repaired.
We are thankful every day for the amazing care we received from the gifted nurses and doctors at Mass Eye and Ear, without them we know our daughter would not have survived. She has had 38 surgeries and procedures, so yes, I WANT TO BE PART OF SOMETHING BIG!
I have joined the Mass Eye and Ear 2017 Boston Marathon® team to help find cures for blindness, deafness and diseases of the head and neck. There are 54 of us on the team and I am honored to run and give back! Team Eye and Ear has raised more than $4 million for research and patient care since 2006.
I have committed to raising $10,000, please help me reach my goal. If you work at a company that has a chartable match please consider donating to my goal, and your company providing a Match! If your company would consider supporting me with a corporate sponsorship, the forms are attached. Your company LOGO could be at the Boston Marathon START!
