BENEFITING: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
ORGANIZER: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
I am a busy full-time working mom of 2 toddlers from Auburn, NH and I have long had a dream to run the Boston Marathon. This is the year I will run in honor of my Grandfather, William “Steve” McLaughlin. Steve lived with vision loss towards the end of his life, but volunteered to become a research participant at Mass. Eye and Ear in a clinical study called AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study). The results of AREDS found treatments to significantly reduce the risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). As the proportion of people in the U.S. age 65 and older grows larger, more people are developing age-related diseases such as AMD. From 2000-2010, the number of people with AMD grew 18 percent, from 1.75 million to 2.07 million. Studies indicate that your chances of developing age-related macular degeneration are three to four times higher if you have a parent, child, or sibling with macular degeneration. Steve was very proud to be part of the study and I am grateful for the opportunity to fundraise for Mass. Eye and Ear to support their continued research.
Thank you for supporting my dream to run the Boston Marathon AND run in honor of my wonderful Grandfather!
