BENEFITING: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
ORGANIZER: Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
I have the privilege to run the 2017 Boston Marathon as part of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear (MEEI) team. I am extremely proud to run this Boston Marathon, my first, in honor of my dad. In 1996, my dad pushed me in a baby jogger over Heartbreak Hill and into Boston as he completed his ninth Boston Marathon. Running has been a foundational hobby for my dad for as long as I can remember and the Boston Marathon has served as a special annual event for my family, as we watch the race - from the elite runners to the stragglers - from the Mile 20 marker, just a handful of blocks from our home.
Unfortunately, after returning from China last September, my dad suffered a detached retina in his eye that left him with diminished vision and has prevented him from enjoying his lifetime hobby of running. Over the past six months, my dad has undergone three optical surgeries (with a fourth scheduled for this spring) and continues to work through his treatment plan to fully regain his eyesight. Throughout my dad’s treatment, my family has experienced firsthand the tremendous care, expertise, and dedication that doctors throughout Boston, including at MEEI, provide to patients each day. Just as my dad pushed me across the finish line 21 years ago, my dad’s ongoing recovery and the tremendous work MEEI clinicians perform for all their patients will push me 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston.
Last year, my dad was one of almost 300,000 people - adults and children - from more than 80 countries, who received treatment at MEEI. Beyond its clinical program, MEEI is home to the world's largest vision and hearing research centers. As a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital, MEEI trains future medical professionals (through highly competitive residency and fellowship programs) to lead the next generation of medical discovery. Located in Boston’s West End neighborhood, MEEI is ranked #1 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.
Every donation, no matter how large or small, is highly appreciated and will go directly to MEEI’s mission to discover and treat cures for blindness, deafness, and diseases of the head and neck. Thank you for your consideration and I hope to see you along the course on Marathon Monday, April 17!
