Team FA SYDNEY (Celise, Emma, Colette)
Celise - A year ago running a marathon seemed like an impossible thing to do so I felt safe saying "I'd do one but only in NYC" opps ...it's turned into a reality- Colette, Emma and I are on our way in November. Yes it's a long way to run (42km) but I get to do lots of chatting with my running buddies on all those long training runs and it's always good to go out for a chat. In honour of Emma's brother, Nick, we are raising money for Friedreich Ataxia (FA) and running for those who can't. How lucky are we! T hank you for being part of this adventure, supporting our crazy goal and FA research. XCelise
Emma - Geez, I wish I caught the marathon bug a bit earlier, it's easier when you're younger but thankfully I can run so I am lucky. My brother Nick can't. He has FA and is now in a wheelchair. If he didn't have FA he would out run me. Prior to the age of 15 Nick was fast, fit, healthy and handsome (he still is the latter). He had his life ahead of him, in his prime and then he was robbed. Following a series of stumbles, broken legs and his slow writing during final exams my desparate parents knew something was not right. They made the painful journey and finally the even more painful discovery that Nick had Friedreich Ataxia. I would do anything to trade places with him. He was the one with the potential. Strong, smart, charming and funny. FA doesn’t discriminate. It can affect the healthy, the young, males, females and even twins. As a mother of 2 young boys my heart goes out to all families who have to take this challenging journey. What my parents and Nick have endured and survived is inspiring. Nick is now 44, works as an accountant and hits the gym 6 days a week. He zips around in his motorised wheelchair. That’s motivation enough for me to get out and run.
Colette - For those of you who don't know I started running 3 years ago with a Fantastic Group of Girls called The Coogee Cougars. It opened up a whole new world for me.Three of us, Emma, Celise and I have decided to take the plunge and get that monkey off our backs! We are planning to do the New York Marathon in November of this year. We are planning to do it because the timing is good,we feel fit(well relatively fit) and because we can! In the process we would like to raise funds for a charity very dear to us, Friedreich Ataxia. Sadly Emma's Brother Nick suffers from this still incurable disease. Nicholas Friedreich is the name of the Physician who discovered the disease. "Ataxia" means a breakdown in co-ordination and balance. Friedreich Ataxia is a genetic disorder of the Central Nervous System which is usually diagnosed at the onset of puberty. It is a progressive disease and symptoms get worse as time goes by. The intellect is not affected. Our goal is to raise $10,000 between the three of us. We have had a Fundraising sausage sizzle already,we are planning a movie night and a second Sausage sizzle. We would be grateful if you could possibly donate to the cause. It doesn't matter how great or small the donation is. However we totally understand if you choose not to donate as there are alot of Fundraising demands and alot of very good causes to which you may be already contributing. Wish us Luck as we contemplate and train for the most physically challenging event of our lives! I really hope we can succeed!
Many thanks to everyone for your support, to our running group the "Coogee Cougars", located in Sydney Australia and to the inspiring founder Jo Davison for introducing us to the wonderful world of running. For more information on FA please visit http://www.fara.org.au/
