BENEFITING: FRED SAYS
EVENT DATE: Oct 16, 2013
HIV + since 2002, I'm grateful for my health, and the fact that on Sunday October 13, 2013 I will run my 8th marathon because I can. I'd like to do my part to make sure that everyone who is HIV + has the opportunity to run marathons or do anything they set their mind to.
As a member of the Board of Directors, I am happy to fundraise on behalf of Fred Says an organization committed to the health and well-being of HIV + adolescents.
Team Fred Says is raising money for the charity Fred Says, which provides resources and covers medical costs for teens affected by HIV.

What is Fred Says?
In 2006, Dr. Rob Garofalo was diagnosed with cancer and in the ensuing years faced a number of personal, professional and health related challenges, along with being diagnosed with HIV. This was a particular low point in his life.
One day he decided to web search "puppy Chicago" and up popped an image that has forever changed his life – a puppy that he named Fred.
Although he had never previously had a pet, Rob credits Fred with bringing both peace and joy to his life again. It's Fred's healing properties that led to the creative endeavor aimed at helping others, Fred Says.
Fred Says works to raise money for young people who are affected by HIV/AIDS. Young people are one of the most affected populations in the world, and many times the most forgotten.
As of 2007, there were 1.2 billion young people aged 15-24 in the world with an estimated 10 million living with HIV.
In the United States, approximately 40-45,000 new HIV infections occur each year, one-half occurring in youth below the age of 25 and one-quarter occurring before the age of 21.
Rob is the Director of Lurie Children's Hospital's Gender, Sexuality and HIV Prevention Center, is an Attending Physician and directs the Adolescent/Young Adult HIV Program. Lurie’s has been the main benefactor of funds raised by the organization to date, but soon the organization will be selecting new benefactors to add on.
In 2013, Fred Says will be launching on April 1st new products to be sold in selected locations and online to continue to raise money. New products will be: a Fred Says leash, Fred Says mug, and a plush toy of Fred among other new products.
