EVENT: ASICS LA Marathon 2013
EVENT DATE: Mar 17, 2013
Running a marathon is a very selfish endeavor. I have been fortunate to have the support of my family and friends on my four previous occasions. As I contemplated a fifth run, I decided there wasn't enough satisfaction to be gained in trying to shave a minute or two off my personal best. This time, there needed to be a larger purpose. Thankfully, I discovered the L.A. Marathon Charity Program and specifically the Fulfillment Fund.
While my loved ones have done their part supporting my 26.2 mile jaunts through my city, the Fulfillment Fund has dedicated itself to supporting the education goals of first-generation, low-income students throughout Southern California. For 34 years, the Fulfillment Fund has provided instruction, counseling, mentoring and scholarships to help children graduate high school, earn college degrees and be productive members of our society. At a time when our confidence in the LAUSD is eroding and high school graduation rates have fallen to 55%, the Fulfillment Fund has stepped in and an incredible 91% of their students graduate high school, with a whopping 93% matriculating into college.
So this year, I'm running the L.A. Marathon not just for myself and my family, but for a group of students who rely on the foundation provided by the Fulfillment Fund. This year, my success in the marathon is not measured by my finish time, but in what I can do to support the students of the Fulfillment Fund in the way those I love have supported me throughout my lifetime. Any contribution to this would be greatly appreciated.
