Alzheimer's disease robs people of their memories, their speech, their ability to eat, walk, get dressed, shower, or even to recognize their loved ones. It fundamentally robs people of their ability to be humans. Today, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, and people are developing this disease younger and younger. Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S., with another American developing the disease nearly every minute. And the scariest part? Alzheimer's is currently the only cause of death among the top 10 in America without a way to prevent, cure, or even slow its progression. The ONLY one.
The number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias is projected to triple, from 5.1 million to 13.8 million, between now and 2050, barring the development of medical breakthroughs to prevent or cure the disease. And women are at the epicenter of the Alzheimer's epidemic. Nearly two-thirds of the Americans living with Alzheimer's -- and more than 60 percent of Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers -- are women. We need to get ahead of this and take action NOW.
Please support my participation in TackleALZ, a flag football game and fundraising competition to help end Alzheimer's. We may be opponents on the field, but when it comes to Alzheimer's, we're all on the same side. This is a disease that must be defeated and we need your help to do it. Your donation will advance the care, support and research efforts of Alzheimer's San Diego.
Thank you for helping us tackle this disease – win or lose, our true goal is a world without Alzheimer's!
