~*Kelsey's Fundraising Story*~
Alzheimer’s disease is the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death and an estimated5.4 million Americans are living with the disease. These two facts alone shed some light on how prevalent and destructive this terrible disease is.
My grandmother, who passed away three years ago, suffered from dementia and it hurt to see just how much the disease affected her and those around her. In the last few years of her life, every time I saw her she just seemed lost, confused and depressed. She wasn’t the happy & healthy grandmother that I remember from when I was younger. She had changed. I now realize that it wasn’t her that changed; it was the disease that changed her.
I think that the hardest part to watch was the way it affected those around her, especially, her children; my mother and uncle. My mother put so much time and energy into trying to make my grandmother happy but each attempt was a failure. My mother was so patient with her, yet I could see the hurt in her eyes when she spoke about Oma.
Watching firsthand what this awful disease does to people and their family fuels my passion and desire to help in any way that I can. I will be participating in the TackleALZ football game for the third consecutive year to helpraise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s. Please join me in making a donation to help advance research to discover methods of prevention, treatment and ultimately, a cure for Alzheimer’s.
Thank you in advance for all of your support! I cannot wait to beat the Blondes and take home the much deserved title! ;)
