BENEFITING: GIRLS ON THE RUN TWIN CITIES INC
ORGANIZER: GIRLS ON THE RUN TWIN CITIES INC
I began running in 2006 after graduating from college and finding it much more difficult to find a pool where I could swim. Having never been a runner nor enjoyed running, it took me 9 months to build up to running 3 miles. I didn't get hooked until I started running longer distances. I loved the meditative nature of long runs; and the endorphin release isn't bad, either. I ran my first marathon in 2010, and have struggled with injuries (shin splints) on and off since then.
Earlier this year I was thinking of training for another distance event, and the events at the Boston Marathon spurred me to action. I am running the Twin Cities Marathon this October to support the victims of the bombings (see my other fundraiser page for TCM Runs for Boston) and to support young girls who will be part of the next generation of runners.
The human body is incredibly strong and also incredibly fragile. Keeping this in mind as I train helps me respect my body and its needs, while also training it to prepare for 26.2 miles. Please support me in this journey by giving young girls a chance to have fun while learning to run, learning to respect and love their bodies, and making new friends.
Girls on the Run of Twin Cities is a life-changing, non-profit prevention program for girls in grades 3rd to 5th grade. Our mission is “to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.”
The program combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. Our program encourages positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development. This program is accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff and the community.
