THE STORY:

Team Gleason wrote -

I am the Executive News Director for KREM 2 News, the CBS affiliate TV station in Spokane, WA.    I will be competing in Ironman Coeur d’Alene on June 29, 2014.  An Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run.  All three must be completed on the same day within 17 hours.

I was partially inspired to race by following the example of Steve Gleason, former star football player for the New Orleans Saints, Washington State University and Gonzaga Prep (Spokane).  I graduated from Gonzaga Prep five years before Steve and he has been one of my heroes as I watched him dominate on the field in high school and later in his career.  When I saw Steve’s courageous response to raise awareness about ALS following his diagnosis in 2011 by starting Team Gleason, I was inspired to start training for an Ironman race, which is something I’ve never done before and far beyond my below average triathlete credentials.  If you could have seen me in my first sprint triathlon in 2005 you would never have thought I would ever consider an Ironman.  I’ve only improved slightly in the last eight years of competing in triathlons.  I’ve also had six major, basketball-related knee surgeries, including three torn ACL’s and a microfracture, so I really have no business attempting an Ironman, but I’ve adopted Steve’s “No White Flags” attitude to make it happen.

In a partnership called Project Inspire with KREM,  WWL-TV in New Orleans and Team Gleason I have created the Team Gleason Ironman Challenge. I’m asking you to donate at least $10 (or more) for the opportunity to guess my Ironman finish time for a chance to win a signed, 16 x 24 framed picture worth $1,500 of Steve’s dramatic 2006 punt block against the Atlanta Falcons in the first football game played in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina.  Click here for complete rules and a guide to guess my finish time. Don’t forget to leave Steve and/or me a note during the donation process.   Thanks for your prayers and support!
