Thank you for taking the time to visit my page!
Growing up in New England, Johnny Kelly and Bill Rodgers inspired us to run…and keep running. As a result, running’s been a part of my life since I could walk. From racing the older kids on the playground (and winning BTW!), to track & field, x-country, road races, and now half and full marathons. When not running, we played soccer, street or ice hockey, baseball, etc. - as it was almost instinctive for us to be constantly active. Thankfully this resulted in an active and healthy lifestyle that followed me into adulthood without much thought.
Unfortunately for too many kids today, that burning desire to be active is absent, and anything but instinctive…resulting in childhood obesity more than tripling in the past 30 years and more than one-third of children and adolescents defined as clinically overweight or obese in 2008.
Thankfully through life-changing programs and groundbreaking research GO KIDS Boston is helping to change this!
If we can asist children at an early age, then like me, it becomes a way of life…without effort. Healthy kids, hopefully means healthy adults.
I can think of no greater cause!
Unfortunately, like so many great causes, they are in need of funding….which ironically brings me to my point!
In my effort to help fight against childhood obesity and the many diseases resulting from it, I am running the 2013 BOSTON MARATHON to raise funds and awareness. I've run two previous marathons, however this time its not about me. My goal is at least $5000, and would greatly appreciate ANY generous donation you feel appropriate.
Please join me in supporting GO KIDS Boston in collaboration with CHILDRENS HOSPITAL, so they may continue to foster the next generation of kids aspiring to be the fastest on the playground…rather than the highest scorer on X-Box!
GoKids Boston embodies innovation and leadership in youth health through life-changing programs, groundbreaking research, exceptional training opportunities, and dedication to the community with a focus on eliminating health disparities.
GoKids Boston, a key strategic initiative of Chancellor Keith Motley, was founded at UMass Boston in 2006 in collaboration with Children's Hospital Boston to advance the science relating exercise to youth health and wellness and to become a local leader in combating the obesity epidemic.
GoKids Boston's unique youth fitness, training, and research center based at the University of Massachusetts Boston's College of Nursing and Health Sciences strives to 1) reduce the impact of obesity on children, families, and communities through service research partnerships, 2) improve children's lives through fitness and supportive relationships, and 3) enlist youth and professionals as health ambassadors.
GoKids provides low income, multi-ethnic youth with engaging physical activity and nutrition education programs aimed at preventing and treating obesity and chronic disease in our safe and supportive environment (a 5,300 square foot fitness center.) Equally important, we provide a training center where College of Nursing and Health Sciences faculty and students produce significant research. The center exemplifies a health promotion-focused youth development program by translating current science into innovative programs and by collaborating with primary care providers, schools, and other community resources.
Thank you again for your thoughtful consideration and generous support...as there really is no more important cause than HEALTHY KIDS! So please join me won't you?
PS. To improve our chances of success, please feel free to share this with others!
