On 25th April 2015 a massive earthquake struck Nepal between the capital of Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara, killing thousands and causing widespread devastation.
Hundreds of thousands of people fled their homes fearing aftershocks and gathered in the surrounding areas, some in makeshift camps. Transport and communications were severely disrupted.
Just over two weeks later on the 12th of May, a second earthquake of a similar magnitude caused further devastation.
This year “Team Gracepoint” is supporting a missionary team in Nepal called Five14 Ministry (www.five14nepal.com) and another missionary team in Africa. to support the construction of a junior college in Liberia. In Nepal, we will work with Five14 and commit to helping rebuild Nepal by providing housing to some displaced families that are in need as well as working on a project to restore tourism and jobs to some badly affected areas.
Our goal in Nepal will be a follows:
1. Earthquake rebuilding -- To donate enough funds to build two houses, $2500 per house.
2. Restart tourism and provide jobs in some of the hardest hit areas -- Five14 is starting to train the Nepalese on how to create coffee businesses by bringing good, third wave, coffee to the trekking trails. Some of these trekking trails are in the most vulnerable villages to human trafficking. This would help to create jobs and would also bring in tourists. Right now, a job is the one thing that keeps children from being sold to human traffickers who prey on the poor. Five14 brings tourists into these communities and create tourism jobs. To do this, they need $6,000 to start the coffee businesses. Five14 have already begun to train “at risk youth” on how to do this but we need your help. Once we get this funding, Five14 will be able to get on the trails and teach the coffee method to the communities that can greatly benefit from it.
Our goal in Africa will be a follows:
The Lord laid on our hearts a project to help build a junior college where nurses, midwives and other health workers will be trained to participate in the health care delivery system in Africa. The exposure of the weaknesses in the Liberian Health Sector during the deadly Ebola Virus outbreak in Africa signified the need of not only helping to restructure the health sector but also for a broad-based participation of the Liberian Private and Faith-Based sectors of which we are a part.
