Emily grew up as a happy, active, friendly child with a giggle and smile that warmed your heart. She enjoyed life and looked forward to the future. She found good in people when others could not and was always there to help. Emily attended Fountain Valley High School in California and although she was struggling with the emotional and psychological aspects of the then undiagnosed HD she graduated in 2006. Shortly thereafter her dreams for the future ended when she was told that she had Juvenile Huntington's Disease, there was no cure and her time was short. She fought this terrible disease partially for herself but mostly for those that still had time. She opened her heart and shared her story with any that would listen. She took part in studies and trials to help others. She participated in workshops, seminars, conferences and other events so that others might learn. When asked if she was on drugs or retarded, she responded “No, I have Huntington's disease and my brain cells are dying" and then kept her feelings to herself. Two days after serving as the 2009 HDSA-OC Walk ambassador she was hospitalized and one week later at the age of 21 she lost her battle.
The Orange County Chapter of Huntington's Disease Society of America is honored to be one of the non-profit partners of the Orange County Marathon/Half Marathon. We are striving to have the biggest "Team to Cure HD" to date! Our goal as a team is to raise at least $10,000 that will help fund research, advocacy, and affected families in need.
Huntington's Disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative brain disorder with symptoms likened to the worst of those associated with Parkinson's, Alzheimer’s and ALS. It is as common as Cystic Fibrosis and Muscular Dystrophy. There currently is no treatment or cure, however, since it's genetic location is known and pre-symptomatic individuals can be identified. HD is an excellent research candidate and a cure will surely benefit those diseases that have so much in common with it.
Please help us in our efforts to end HD and provide help for those who suffer from it. To learn more about Huntington's Disease and our Orange County Chapter, please click HERE.
