BENEFITING: Boston Health Care For The Homeless Program Inc
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
It’s Sam! Welcome.
The Boston Marathon is in April, and I’m going to run it. Fast. I’m part of a small team of runners hoping to raise some money and awareness for an exciting organization:
Since 1985, Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) has been driven by a simple, yet compelling mission--to provide and assure access to the highest quality health care for Boston's homeless men, women and children. People experiencing homelessness are among our community's most vulnerable and unwell, with an increased exposure to illnesses, injuries and trauma. However, homeless patients often forego the care they need as they strive to meet their immediate needs of food, clothing and a safe place to sleep. By delivering accessible health care services at over 80 locations--including within the walls of Boston's family and emergency shelters, under bridges, along back alleys and in hospital-based clinics--BHCHP cares for more than 12,000 homeless patients each year.
I’ve been working at BHCHP for 4+ years as the nurse for the opiate treatment program. Our little corner of the clinic treats homeless men and women trying to overcome heroin addiction and make the changes necessary to live a healthy and manageable life. The determination, hard work, and consistency our patients must exhibit in the face of some potentially overwhelming barriers is moving to consider. Watching the starts and stops, the side-tracks and slip-ups, the temporary set-backs and small victories is both heart-breaking and inspirational. We have worked very hard to create an environment where our patients can feel safe, listened to, supported, and hopeful. Their stories are ongoing, both successful and not, and BHCHP has become, for them, a steady support in an unpredictable and ever changing environment.
I hope you'll consider making a donation ($50+ equals a free t-shirt!), but no matter what, I’m glad your reading this and making contact, especially if this is the first time in a bit. Let me know what you’re up to, and best wishes all around.
- Also... if you want more information on the organization or on giving, let me know and I'll be happy to get in touch with you. There are also some benefits for corporate giving- so if you, or someone you know, works for an organization that might be interested in contributing and getting a little publicity, lead them here.
