BENEFITING: The Ben Cohen Standup Foundation Inc
Thanks to Nick and his recent brain child, we decided to run a half marathon together in May. Soon after we both survived our first long runs and the idea of running 13.1 miles became a reality, we decided to sign up for the Twin Lights Half on May 5th in Gloucester. We couldn't think of a better way to get more people involved in a cause that we feel is important than to raise funds for an incredible organization through this race.
The Ben Cohen Standup Foundation is the first of its kind, with a professional athlete spreading awareness of and helping to put an end to bullying. Ben Cohen is a retired Rugby Player from the UK who has been making his way to the US, inspiring kids to combat the horrible effects of bullying, specifically anti-gay behaviors, and homophobia in sports. Bullying should be intolerable in every capacity, but has unfortunately become a norm in all levels of athletics, be it gym class or professional competitions. It is all too common that bullying results in deep psychological trauma and consequently, suicide. In children 15-24, suicide is the third leading cause of death (NIMH), and the 10th leading cause of death in the entire US population (AFSP), where more often than not, trauma from peers is the culprit. As a sports icon in the UK, Ben Cohen has been using his fame and love of rugby for good- reaching out and traveling around the world to educate children about this behavior and its long-lasting effects. We feel that suicide in teens, children, and young adults from such hateful actions can and should be prevented.
The money raised here will go directly to the foundation, providing resources for their phenomenal anti-bullying education and outreach efforts. For more information about Ben Cohen and what his organization does, check out the website: http://www.standupfoundation.com/
Any size donation would mean an incredible amount to us in our efforts to support this cause! We are accepting flat donations on this website up until two weeks after the race. As an alternative to that, and for some added motivation on this notoriously hilly course, we are also taking donations per mile that we run completely without walking. Help us kick our butts and reach our donation goal!
