Team Hoyt San Diego was inspired by father, Dick Hoyt, and his son, Rick Hoyt, who compete together in an endurance events year round. Rick was born in 1962 with cerebral palsy. The doctors told Dick and his wife to put Rick in an institution. Dick and his wife refused, and committed to raising Rick like any other child.
In 1977 he asked Dick to push him in a five mile road race to support a high school athlete who had been paralzyed in a car accident. After that race, Rick told his dad that when they were running, it felt like his disability disappeared. Since then, Dick and Rick have competed in over 1,100 endurance events, including 32 Boston Marathons and six Ironman distance triathlons.
Team Hoyt San Diego is dedicated to giving other people with disabilities the same opportunity that Rick has had to be involved in endurance events.
