Support Team IAFFPE and Put FPIES on the Run

2 teams, 7 runners, 26.2 miles.

What’s more challenging than running a marathon? Feeding a child with FPIES. On December 2, 2012, Team IAFFPE will conquer the California International Marathon in Sacramento to raise awareness and fund research for Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES). All money raised will benefit the International Association for Food Protein Enterocolitis (IAFFPE).

By supporting Team IAFFPE, you’re supporting Gracie, Olivia, Xavier, Stella, Reagan, Ronan, Walker, and FPIES kids everywhere.

What is FPIES?

FPIES is a rare allergic reaction in the gastrointestinal system. The most common triggers are milk and soy, but any food, even those thought to be hypoallergenic, can cause an FPIES reaction. Unlike most food allergies that produce immediate reactions such as swelling and hives, FPIES reactions usually begin about 2 hours after ingestion of the “trigger” food. FPIES reactions are characterized by profuse vomiting, lethargy and diarrhea, in some cases to the point of shock.

Little is known about FPIES, and few doctors are able to recognize and diagnose the syndrome. There is currently no cure or standardized treatment for FPIES. The process of finding safe foods for an individual with FPIES can be extremely challenging. Each food must be trialed slowly while parents and caretakers look for potential reactions. When a reaction does occur, healing can take days to weeks before a new food can be trialed.

How You Can Help

IAFFPE is a recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation and organization that provides education, support, and advocacy for individuals with FPIES and their families. Your generous, fully tax-deductible contribution will be used to continue IAFFPE’s mission to improve the quality of life of those affected by FPIES, while working towards a cure.

Thank you for your support. For more information about FPIES and IAFFPE, please visit www.iaffpe.org.
