Running the NYC Martathon was something I put on my bucket list after watching from the sidelines a couple of times. Since the odds of getting into the lottery are somewhere in the 7% range, I decided the best bet for me was to find a charity, raise some money, and run with a team.
After some research, I found Camp Interactive and their combined approach of using techinical skill building and outdoor experiences to help inner-city kids achieve their potential. Being from Kansas (and spending lots of time outdoors) and also being heavily involved in web video, it seems liked a perfect match. I decided to run the half marathon with the team to test the waters and see if I enjoyed the people involved in the charity. I had a wonderful time, so I signed up for the marathon team.
Fast forward a bit, and I actually beat the odds and got in the marathon through the lottery. I was in the marathon, and for free. It didn't matter. I learned through my past experiences with Camp Interactive, that I wanted to support them and their cause by raising money for the marathon.
So here I am hitting you up for money to support a cause you're likely just now hearing about, and I fully understand if you are a little skeptical. I've already been through the training and experinces of one race with the people of Camp Interactive, and I can tell you that they are good people, with a good program, that is helping kids in a way that larger organizations cannot do. Your contribution will have a significantly larger impact to helping Brayan and his fellow Camp Interactive students.
If that's not enough in itself, I've also decided to toss in a few rewards for certain donation levels.
$25 - sweaty high five at the end of the race (or just a high five the next time I see you)
$50 - sweaty post race hug + pre or post-race shoutout on your social network of choice.
$100 - sweaty post race hug, social shoutout, and you can choose my Facebook and Twitter profile photo for a day.
$250 - you can choose my Facebook and Twitter profile photo for a day + choose the name I wear on my shirt during 3 miles of the race (must be kid-appropriate)
$300 - 2 hours of personal errands run or I'll come clean your apartment
$500 - happy hour on my sweet roofdeck (my treat)
$1000 - invitation to our house for an Lex-cooked meal on our roofdeck (all my treat, including booze) + you can cut off a chunk of my hair when it's long enough to donate.
