Our lives changed overnight on April 22, 2015 when a stomach-ache took us from Renown to UCSF via careflight because an ultrasound revealed significant masses in Jackson's abdomen. Jackson had a large tumor (over 7 inches in diameter) in his abdomen that was wrapped around or pushing up against all of his organs. Pathology revealed he had Stage 4 High-Risk Neuroblastoma. With each test and scan at UCSF the news got worse and worse. The cancer had spread to his bone marrow and spots throughout his body on his skull, hips, thighs, spine and shoulders. Further tests revealed his disease was positive for the N-MYC amplification. Most children with NB are between ages 3 and 5 and Jackson's age was one more strike against us as the "older" kids don't respond as well to treatment. Through all of this we learned that Neuroblastoma is one of the deadliest forms of pediatric cancer, yet because it is rare (700 new cases a year in the US), funding for new therapies is lacking.
Fast forward to the MIRACULOUS news! Jackson is in REMISSION! His treatment included 6 chemotherapy treatments, surgery (he lost one kidney), MIBG therapy and a bone marrow transplant. He is currently undergoing radiation and will begin antibody immunotherapy in a few weeks and finish treatment in August. Jackson only had a partial response to chemotherapy but the MIBG therapy was so successful that it put him into remission. We were fortunate to be at UCSF with experts in MIBG therapy (Dr. Katherine Matthay and Dr. Clay Gustafson) who recommended the clinical trial which included MIBG therapy in front-line treatment. We know the relapse rate is high and there are no known "cures" for relapse. The team at UCSF is working diligently to find better cures for neuroblastoma. We are raising money specifically to support Neuroblastoma research with the hope that other children will benefit from Jackson's success thus far and so the team can find more effective treatments to prevent relapse.
