THE STORY:

I am very excited to be running the 2013 Boston Marathon for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation.  Running the Boston Marathon for charity was something I had been intrigued to do, but it had to be for a cause I was passionate about.  I came across the Joe Andruzzi Foundation with the approach of UpBeat Cancer, fighting cancer with a positive attitude and a sense of humor and it was exactly what I was looking for at a very difficult time.

In July of 2012, my Dad had an operation to have his kidney removed due to a very large tumor that was growing in his kidney.  The operation went well, but later that month we found out the tumor was cancerous and there was a very small spot in his lung with cancer.  The lung could not be operated on, but he could take a pill that would reduce the growth of the cancer.  However, he would have to take it the rest of his life.  His whole life was about to change, but you never would have known.  He was so positive and so optimistic about the situation: "all I have to do is take a pill everyday, Caroline. Most of my friends already do that".  In October of 2012 he lost some of his vision and we later found out the cancer had spread to his brain.  "I am going to have a small operation on my brain so they can remove the tumors, Caroline.  It will be a piece of cake, I have a great doctor!"  He came out of that surgery, and we thought he was funnier.  He had us all laughing, and was again so positive.  My Dad then had 3 weeks of radiation treatment.  Although he was very tired and very weak during this time I never heard a negative word out of him.  Instead he made plans for when he was better and kept all of our hopes up.  In January 2013, there was nothing more that could be done.  Radiation did not work and the cancer had spread too much.  He went on Hospice care and passed away on January 30th.  He thanked every doctor and nurse that treated him, even knowing he was going to die, he could not have been more grateful.  He told my siblings and I that he was at peace and he did everything he wanted to in life, and again he was so positive.  When I look back at those six months, I think about how positive he was and how much that helped all of us.  He was the one fighting for his life, yet he was still helping us.  Every time he went to the doctor he got bad news, but every time he called me he was so positive.  I don't know if he knew how much his optimism helped me, but he said he was incapable of discouragement.  He taught me the power of a positive attitude because while he was not able to beat the cancer physically, he did beat the cancer mentally, he never let it get him down.

I want to run this marathon with my Dad's positive attitude, I know I will need it to make it to the finish line.  My goal is to raise $5000 for a foundation that faces cancer with a positive approach.  The Joe Andruzzi foundation provides financial assistance for cancer patients and their families.  My family has been fortunate enough to have an overwhelming amount of support not only financial, but also emotional support from friends, family and neighbors.  They carried us every step of the way.  I cannot imagine approaching this terrible disease without that support.  Please help me raise money for families who are in need, I speak from experience every little bit really does help.
