BENEFITING: JOE ANDRUZZI FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: JOE ANDRUZZI FOUNDATION
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
My name is Catherine Beer and I am a senior at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Massachusetts. I have been playing soccer intensely since I was ten years old, which really got me interested in running and working out. This spring, I am going to be running the marathon for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation.
The Joe Andruzzi Foundation’s focus on a positive commitment to beating cancer parallels my interest in a future life embodied by leadership in service to others. Working with the Joe Andruzzi foundation will aid me in reaching my goal of service to others by providing the means to gain knowledge. The Joe Andruzzi Foundation concentrates on helping those affected by cancer. Joe Andruzzi played offensive guard in the National Football League for a number of years for the Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots and the Cleveland Browns. During his career, he helped launch the C. J. Buckley Brain Cancer Research Fund at Children’s Hospital in response to the death of C. J. Buckley, who was lost to an inoperable brain tumor. Joe had a dire determination to help those in need, especially those affected by cancer. Later in his career, Joe was personally affected by a disheartening cancer; he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Burkitt’s lymphoma, which was predicted to double in size within twenty-four hours. Undertaking the most aggressive chemotherapy treatment over three months, he, with undying strength and courage, fought this nasty disease. Together, Joe and his wife, Jen, run the Joe Andruzzi Foundation, which aims at tackling cancer’s impact by providing financial and emotional assistance for patients and their families as well as funding pediatric brain cancer research. They aim to serve as many patients as possible. The Joe Andruzzi Foundation holds a number of events and campaigns that raise awareness about cancer and their organization, and that raise money for their purpose of helping as many patients as possible. Joe and Jen Andruzzi work tirelessly to plan campaigns, raise money and aid patients in their fight against the daunting disease of Cancer.
The next large event coming up for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation is the Marathon on April 15, 2013. I plan to raise at least $5000 for this foundation and ultimately run the Boston Marathon. I am looking forward to helping an organization I have a deep passion and interest for through participating in an activity that I simply can not get enough of: running. Also, this spring I plan on working on a project with Jen Andruzzi and her team on a daily basis in order to help out and learn how to develop an intellectually stimulating and moving campaign. My goal is to serve others and to learn as much as possible. I will be able to shadow professionals, partake in the intricate planning that goes on for major events and develop my own knowledge in a number of different areas. I will be able to serve others by helping raise money and by planning major events that the organization is going to hold; furthermore, my goal is to learn the intricate steps in planning such elaborate and successful campaigns. Specifically, I will learn how to market a campaign. By shadowing learned professionals and offering up my young mind and skills to this organization, I will partake in a building experience that will ultimately provide me with the steps it takes to run such poignant campaigns and such a successful foundation.
Through working on this project, raising money for the foundation and running the marathon I hope to develop my knowledge and concern for others that will ultimately serve as a solid basis, on which I would be able to lean heavily in upon attending college on my own next year. I would appreciate any support I can get in raising money for this foundation.

The JAF Marathon Team is fundraising to help cancer patients pay pressing bills and to raise funds for pediatric brain cancer research. Our mission is to (Up)Beat Cancer! What is (Up)Beat Cancer?
It’s everything we stand for. It’s our philosophy. And our rallying cry. Upbeat is how Joe approached cancer, and he battled through it. Now we’re committed to helping others. Together, with a positive attitude and a sense of humor, we’ll fight to not only beat cancer, but upbeat it.
