BENEFITING: Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston
ORGANIZER: Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston
EVENT: 2016 Boston Marathon
For the past 12 years I have volunteered at the Boston Marathon; 11 of those years as leader of the finish line blankets group. Depending on the number of race participants, I generally have between 85 and 115 volunteers that work tirelessly on Patriot's Day, regardless of the weather, to ensure that each runner crossing the finish line is welcomed to Boston, wrapped in a "heatsheet" and pointed in the right direction to receive medical care or meet up with family members. It is a tremendous experience and I thoroughly enjoy catching up with returning volunteers, meeting the folks giving it a try for the first time and interacting with runners.
This year, I am able to trade in my volunteer credentials for a runner's number. Having dealt with several injuries that have impacted my training over the past four months, I have questioned the sanity (or insanity) of this decision. Regardless, I am committed to finishing the race, probably getting dragged across the finish line.
Running the marathon is an individual effort, but it takes the support of many to actually finish it and pay it forward. Moving towards that goal, I am asking for your support in raising money for the benefit of two very worthwhile charities - Boys & Girls Club of Boston and the Ron Burton Training Village. Thanks in advance for your kind generosity, it is much appreciated.

Team John Hancock 2016
Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) and Ron Burton Training Village (RBTV) are thrilled to partner with our inspired 2016 Boston Marathon team of John Hancock employees to raise funds to provide hope and opportunity for youth in the greater Boston area. To streamline our donation process this year, all gifts will be directed to Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) and then divided equally between BGCB and RBTV.
Boys & Girls Club of Boston (BGCB)
Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB) provides nearly 16,000 young people in our community with a safe place to go after school where caring adult role models deliver fun and enriching programs. Activities are strategically developed to help youth succeed academically, live healthy lifestyles, build character and practice good citizenship. While BGCB invests an average of $2,800 per member, critical financial support from our partners helps keeps the cost of membership affordable for the children we serve, many of whom come from low-income families and single-parent households. At only $25 per school year for children ages 6-12 and just $5 for teens, members get the strong start they need for a great future.

The mission of the Ron Burton Training Village is to enrich the lives of challenged youth in the areas of dynamic character and leadership development, physical fitness, social and educational advancement, and spiritual growth. Over the past thirty years, the Ron Burton Training Village has served more than 4,000 young men and women in their spiritual, physical and educational growth. The year-round development of each child, further underscored by the 5-week summer experience, focuses on four key areas: academic excellence, character and leadership development, sports and fitness, and spiritual growth. Many applicants come from difficult, and troubled environments, they face challenges that may impact their decision-making skills and ability to successfully achieve their goals.
