Name: Jordan Hoepelman
About me and my family: I was born and raised a New York. My father, Hendrick B. Hoepelman, Sr., is from Dominican Republic and my mother, Carmen G. Hoeplman, is from New York. I also have a brother, Hendrick L. Hoepelman, Jr., who I admire dearly. He is my best friend, mentor and the person who knows me the best, aside from my mother. I have a lot of relatives from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, especially on my father’s side. I’ve never had the chance to meet my whole family because they live in different places and I do not have the time to go and see them all.
Having a small family in New York, you learn to appreciate them a lot because those are the people that are there for you whenever you’re feeling down or feeling like the world is crashing, or you just feel like giving up. They are the only people who will pick you up, dust you off and push you to keep trying, it’s sort of like a kite. A kite will come down and down, but you still try to pick that kite up and fly it again until it is successful. Family is important to me and to many people. Even though my family is half Puerto Rican half Dominican, they put aside differences and work together to become one.
My family also supports my acting. Acting is a big deal for me because it’s the only thing I can see myself doing. I understand statistics and I understand that very few actually succeed in that career, but I don’t care! This is what I want to do. Hearing more and more about these statistics makes my hunger and passion even more powerful than before. The big challenge I’m facing now is making time for acting. Making time is a little bit of a problem because, of course, I have school and after school activities I like to participate in. I’m definitely going to work hard on making more time for my interests and working on more projects along the way.
Why you should support Downtown Art: Supporting Downtown Art is great because it’s a chance for any person, no matter what gender, color, size, shape, to have a great time expressing themselves and opening up to feel less uncomfortable with their lives. It’s also a great experience to meet different people from all around New York and become well acquainted with them, learn about their interests and why they love doing what it is they like to do. Being part of Downtown Art has made me love to act even more. I enjoy the opportunity of working with different Directors and experience their different ideas on how they think a show should be done.
I know that people who attend shows from Downtown Art will enjoy the performances today, tomorrow and always.
