“No one ever gets far unless he accomplishes the impossible at least once a day” –Elbert Hubbard
On December 6, 2002, José Maldonado – dedicated husband and father of two, and co-founder of IT services firm CentreTEK Solutions – suffered a severe intra-cerebral hemorrhage. This profoundly devastating stroke left José with partial paralysis in his upper and lower extremeties, aphasia, facial paralysis and hearing difficulties.
José was determined not to give up on his life, and began an aggressive therapy program of 5-6 days per week with sessions lasting 4-6 hours per day. With unwavering support of his family, José began to experience recovery of his abilities, and eventually began walking again without reliance on his wheel chair. Ultimately he was able to resume activities he once considered impossible such as driving, using a computer and returning to work.
As a dedicated stroke survivor advocate, José spends considerable time working with other stroke survivors through the NIH, CDC, Veteran’s Administration, the Kennedy Krieger Institute and the American Heart Association. José’s message is simple: “There is Life after Stroke and it can be a rich and fulfilling life. Don’t give up, it’s not the end – it’s only the beginning.”
