BENEFITING: National Fragile X Foundation
EVENT DATE: Oct 17, 2015
It's that time of year again......time for me to ask my friends and family to help us! I set a fundraising goal each year in conjunction with the Annual Walk for the Faces of Fragile X. This is our 5th year doing this amazing event for which I volunteer many hours of my time and energy. It's a day at the park when my family is in a comfortable, caring social setting -- where we don't feel "different" or "odd" -- not something we often experience given the severity of Josh's Fragile X Syndrome. The first years with Josh were tough for me. It was before the internet and social media, my husband was transferred to Kansas and I knew no one in my community and very little about this disability that had rocked my world to its very core. That is the reason I try so hard every year to have a lofty fundraising goal -- to make sure no one lives in isolation; to help make a conference possible in conjunction with KU that brings in world renowned experts on Fragile X to help our FX families and their educational teams learn how to deal with our sometimes daunting challenges; to provide scholarships for National Fragile X Advocacy Day so that we are able to talk to legislators about our challenges and ask for support of legislation that will help us help our children; to provide scholarships to the bi-annual International Fragile X Conference -- I was never more proud of my efforts and the support of my friends and family as I was two years ago when a young family was able to attend and I heard them say "Being here with other Fragile X families and being in the workshops has changed our life!" The funds also go toward supporting the National Fragile X Foundation and its research and clinical consortium.
Donations: It is a lot to ask, I know. I am a proud person so asking for help is not easy for me. If anyone can afford to give a little (or a lot!) towards Team Joshman's goal, it would be appreciated. It is a charitable contribution and tax deductible.
Registration/Join Team Joshman: Anyone who can join us at the walk on October 17th, would be welcomed with open arms! Please register online by September 30 to guarantee your shirt size on the day of the walk. If you prefer to pay by check you may still register online and use the coupon code "FRAGILEX." With that code, the system will accept your registration and your shirt order will be received. You may then mail the check to the address indicated on the main fundraising page (click on the event at the top of my page).
Auction Items: If anyone is interested in contributing an item to the auction that takes place during the walk, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I will need your name, address, a description of the donation, the value of the item (if it is handmade, the amount you would sell it for or the cost of your supplies would suffice for your tax deduction). Gift cards, theme baskets, sporting event tickets, autographed sports items from our local teams, handmade items, original artwork/paintings, wine tasting events, brewery tastings, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Please only contribute new items.
You are SO important to us: To all of you who have helped us meet our goals in the past four years, THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH! To those of you thinking of doing something this year, please do.....and know it will make a difference for us and the many other families whom we have grown to love and cherish.
