The Firefox Challenge is over, but you are still welcome to donate to Feeding America through TeamJS. Please, note, though that donations made after January 11th do not count toward a JSConf conference discount.
#TeamJS is giving generously to fight hunger in the US!
Its just crazy that there's a major hunger problem in a country with huge food surpluses. Feeding America is doing something about it: they're a national organization that collects surplus food before it is thrown out and distributes it to a network of food banks that distribute it to people in need.
They're very efficient at it: each dollar donated provides eight meals. And they've got very low administrative and fundraising overhead: 96% of their money goes to their hunger programs.
The video on the left is a really good overview of the hunger problem in the US. Lots of data from Feeding America research. I learned a lot from it. I can only embed one video on the page, but here's another good one that puts some faces on the data. There are even Feeding America videos with celebrities!
Are you part of a different tech community? Python? Ruby? PHP? Java? You're welcome here, too. Or, start your own team and take us on. If you designate Feeding America as your charity, then we can have fun competing for donations, but still work together to win the $25k prize to fight hunger.
